Stopping progress

A letter to the editor in today’s Times News equated the proposed PennEast pipeline with progress.  The letter writer continued with that old cliche “You can’t stop progress.”

I was reminded of a statement by the columnist Russell Baker:  “Usually, terrible things that are done with the excuse that progress requires them are not really progress at all, but just terrible things.”

That’s exactly what I think about the Penn East pipeline.

  1. Here we have another person living under a rock. He can't be serious with his comment "This will someday be a booming industry in northeastern Pennsylvania. If I had to invest in the stock market, I would invest in the natural gas industry. You can't go wrong."

How many jobs were created with the pipeline he mentions? Maybe they should run the pipeline down in front of his house. Then if it blows up it would be booming. He should take the time to find out how many leaks have occured in pipelines. I have yet to hear about a perfect pipeline. It is also common knowledge that many gas stations have leaking tanks. When metal is exposed (above or below ground} it will rot or corrode and then the leaks happen Is that progress?
