Canada now has its first indigenous provincial Premier. He is Anishinaabe, he is a member of the New Democratic Party, and he was just selected to head the Province of Manitoba.
The election campaign was bitter; Mr. Kinew had a police record, and his opponent Ms. Stefanson, failed to disclose real estate sales totaling 31 million Canadian dollars.
Nonetheless, Ms; Stefanson noted in her concession speech the historic importance of Mr. Kinew’s victory. She said, “Wab, I hope that your win tonight inspires a future generation of Indigenous youth to get involved in our democratic process–not just here in Manitoba, but right across the country.”
That’s how they hold elections in Canada.
