Both were on the front page of yesterday’s Times. The first: “Biden Cuts Off Israeli Settlers Tied to Attacks.” This has more symbolism than meaningful policy, since most of the settlers don’t have many ties to the U.S. already. Nonetheless, symbols are important. Israeli settlers are a barrier to peace in the Middle East, and the current Israeli government eggs them on. The Biden policy is a sign that the U.S. now recognizes the problem.
The second headline read “Precise Prodding Secures E.U. Deal on Ukraine Fund.” Orban, the “strongman/dictator” of Hungary, had been opposing any aid to Ukraine. He finally relented, and Ukraine will get $54 billion in aid. This will at least partially counteract the support for Putin by Republican House members.
These days I’ll grasp at any good news.
