Airport Delay

It is a truism that the worst trips make the best stories, so I have a great story.  Friday was the first sunny day we had in California, so we anticipated no problems flying out of the Sac airport.  Whoops.

The departure was delayed because of high winds in Las Vegas, our first stop.  Once we got on the plane, we sat on the runway for over an hour.  When we finally got to Las Vegas our connecting flight to Philadelphia had already departed.  They put us on a plane to Nashville, and from there to Philly, but the Nashville plane didn’t leave until Saturday morning.

That meant a night sleeping in the airport.  I know that many of you would have seized the opportunity to go into Las Vegas and catch a show or gamble, but we are rubes from the country.  The thought of trying to find our way to a hotel and get back in time for our plane’s departure was way too scary.  So we slept on the floor.  Of course our toothbrushes and everything else was in the suitcases, presumably on their way to Philadelphia.

The plane from Las Vegas to Nashville was late, but it didn’t matter, since we had a five hour layover in Nashville.  The plane leaving Nashville was two hours late anyway.  When we finally reached Philly, about 1 a.m., we still had to get the shuttle to long term parking and then drive home in the fog.  We got home at 4 a.m.

I decided not to post anything.  I hope you understand.

  1. We learned a long time ago to have a change of clothes, medication and other essential items in a carry on bag. I feel your pain, I have spent my share of time in airports with delays.

  2. Your story brings back memories of a vacation return trip from Las Vegas in December 1998.
We left on a nice day, like you did. Our flight was to be Chicago and then to Newark, NJ. Well we did leave on time from LV to Chicago. Got to Chicago OK. Our fight to Newark was cancelled because a major snow storm was hammering the east coast. We checked and found that Boston was still open and we could get on that flight. I told our son that I knew my way around Boston and the subway's and the train stations. We got on the flight OK and made it to Boston just in time. The snow was beginning to get bad. Since the subway has a station at the airport we got on and made it to South station. Found that the trains were running late, but we could get out to Newark. Spent about 6 hours til the train departure. Travel was overnight. Got to Newark in the morning and then had to take a Bus to Newark airport to get our son's car. After getting his car we made it to his apartment in North Plainfield. Spent the day and night there. We finally got home a day and half later. What should have been a 5 hour flight turned into a 24 hour deal. Reminds me of the movie, "Trains, airplane and automobiles" We were "Airplane, Train, Bus and Automobile"
