The Mormons have a health code, known as the Word of Wisdom. This code forbids the use of "hot drinks," which some Mormons think not only includes tea and coffee, but caffeine as well. On the other hand, the Word of Wisdom makes no mention of caffeine as such, nor does it mention ice cream or Dr. Pepper.
Earlier this year the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City began selling Coke products with caffeine, and Mitt Romney has been seen drinking a diet Coke.
But not at BYU. The College, located in Provo, Utah, will continue to prohibit caffeinated drinks on campus.
I have no idea what LDS members think about hot chocolate.
Just saw this. I am a Mormon and thought I would address this old curiousity of yours. Mormons almost worship hot chocolate. And root beer. And one day at the church-owned thrift store, I found they had put caffeine free Mountain Dew in the vending machine. So I tried it. It just wasn't the same. :)
ReplyDeleteAs you know, I'm an ex-Mormon (also known as Exmo or Forman...former Mormon). I agree with Gail, hot chocolate is exempt from the Word of Wisdom (WoW) although it is both hot and has caffeine.
ReplyDeleteThe WoW has undergone many changes over the years, depending on who the prophet was at the time and how he interpreted it. Joseph Smith himself smoked and drank, which many Mormons don't know. Wikipedia has a whole page devoted to it and here's a link if you're interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_Wisdom
