Brain rot

Every year Oxford University Press picks a “word of the year.”  This year that word (actually, to be technical, a phrase) is “brain rot.”  Its usage has grown by 230% over last year.

According to Oxford, the word is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.”

I’ve seen this.  In waiting rooms, while walking, on park benches, during meals, people are staring at their phones and rotting their brains.  I didn’t know it had a name, but brain rot is definitely appropriate.

  1. You're being quick to judge. If they have the Kindle app on their phone they might be reading a text book on DNA or Virology or a blog by a retired college professor. Would I get brain rot from that? Or are some people predisposed to brain rot?

  2. Possible. I'm guessing not for 98%.
