Like New Jersey?

We drove past the polling location in Trachsvile this morning.  Unlike last November there was no line snaking around the outside; just one guy passing out literature.  Of course we had to see what he was doing, and he gave us a slate card for the Republican candidates for state judicial seats on the front and local Republican candidates on the back.  The card included a recommendation that Judge Nanovic be retained, but no such recommendation for Judge Matika, who is a Democrat.  I found it interesting that the Democratic County Committee did not endorse either Carbon County judge, feeling that both Democratic Matika and Republican Nanovic were doing a good job.

When I questioned the recommendation for the statewide judicial offices, he said “We don’t want Pennsylvania to become like New Jersey.”  That is a good line for this area, where people seem to uniformly hate New Jersey, but I was thinking, “If only.”

It would be great to live in a state where the governor and legislature care about the environment, oppose pipelines, provide roughly equal funding for school children regardless of the wealth of the district, have reasonably good roads (at least the ones I’ve been on), worry about global warming, have a higher rate of Covid vaccinations, don’t push stupid laws allowing everyone to carry a gun, and in general rank in the top ten on almost any scale of progress.
