I saw Willie Mays play. He was with the New York Giants. They were playing the Philadelphia Phillies in Connie Mack stadium. It was in 1957. When he came up to bat the Phillies fans booed. I was amazed. Why would they boo Willie Mays?
It was before I realized what jerks Philadelphia fans could be.
They even booed Mike Schmidt who was one of their best players ever. Philly fans are not in my opinion baseball fans. Of course, that can be said for the Eagles, Flyers and the 76ers. They want nothing but perfection, I wonder how many of them lead perfect lives in everything they do.
ReplyDeleteMike Schmidt was having a run of bad luck hitting at one point in his career. He was in a convertible and drove next to a school bus full of Philadelphia school kids. The kids recognized him and began to shout out the windows: "Choke, choke." True story.
